Know Your Routes: Route 68

The 68, run by Go-Ahead (London Central), is part of "the 68 group". Sounds quite sophisticated doesn't it? The 68 group consists of the 68,468,N68 & X68. This is because they all follow the same route corridor. By that I mean they all follow the same line of route at SOME point in their journey. For example, they all follow each other between West Norwood and Elephant & Castle.

The current vehicle specification on the 68, and indeed the whole "68 group", is in the form of Wright Eclipse Gemini Volvo B7TL's. They where delivered in March 2006 when all 4 routes required contract renewals. The 68 group was run by Arriva London at the time, and had done so for 6 years. The routes were then awarded to Go-Ahead London and the buses used when they were owned by Arriva, were transferred to other high profile routes such as the 2,176,432,417 etc..

The 68 takes about an hour to get from one end of the route to the other usually, and is VERY frequent. It runs every 7-8 mins during the week (including Saturdays) and Sundays every 12 minutes. Some routes in London run up to an HOUR during the week, and don't even get me started on their Sunday service..... So if you live along the 68 route of near to it, be VERY grateful! you are very privileged to have such a reliable service!

The 68 runs through:

  • Tulse Hill
  • Herne Hill
  • Denmark Hill
  • Camberwell
  • Walworth
  • Elephant & Castle
  • Waterloo
  • Aldwych
  • Holborn
  • Russell Square

  2. Oh by the way X68 goes via route 2 and 59 to Waterloo and not via 68 directly, in order to save time(/money?/routeing). It changed a few years back when it was via 68 and slowly to both then strictly to via 2 to Brixton and 59 to Russell Square later on (not strict but normally strictish).
