Weekly Weird Workings
Daily, there are buses that stray onto an unallocated route. Weekly, there is a few buses that may see to an unallocated route they do not usually. Monthly, there will be that bus that will make its first appearance on an unallocated route in a very long time; it may even be the first time. We endeavour to provide the best workings London has to offer and the writers here have plunged into the depths of their photo collections to provide you the best of the past and present. Remember you can press the title of each slide to redirect you to the Flickr photo where, captioned, is information about the working shown. To get the most recent working, our homepage slideshow has a slide dedicated to what this page is all about.
October 2013
October was an interesting month to start this page as we had one of Metroline's soon-to-be withdrawn Plaxton President bodied Dennis Trident 2 (TP) buses make one of the rarest workings of recent times. TP430 (LK03 GFV) did a duty on route 332 on 8 October 2013, and with the London Bus Breh knowing the driver this could not have been a better experience. A Plaxton President can only be recalled on service for the 332 thrice during the seven years the route has been operational.
Later on in the month saw Abellio London route 414, allocated with 59-reg Alexander Dennis Enviro400 (9505-9523), add to the rare working list although this time it was a bus of the same vehicle type. An Alexander Dennis Enviro400, refurbished with the new yellow and red Abellio London interior moquette allocated to route 452, did a duty on the 414 this month. Similarly, where a bus of the same vehicle type that is allocated to a route is considered a rare working, was the 187: allocated with 58- and 09-reg Alexander Dennis Enviro200 Dart (DE) buses, the much lighter and faster DEL-classed Enviro200 from route 206 appeared on the route. The 187 cannot really vary itself of vehicle types as Alexander Dennis Enviro200 Dart buses are the only vehicle type at Willesden Junction (WJ), however this is the first notable time a DEL-classed bus has appeared on the route, making journeys much more faster and enjoyable.
November 2013
More of a special one to our page rather than 'weird': since 2011, Transport for London have been coating a selected bunch of London buses with Poppy designs in commemoration of Remembrance Day and this year was no exception, with ten London buses and now two London Underground tube trains plastered with the neat wrappers.
The workings were not as weird as the previous month. Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 buses on both Volvo B9TL and Volvo B5L hybrid chassis (VW/VWH) allocated to route 52 commonly stray onto routes 260 and 460 for both routes' morning service and occasionally on routes 6 and 98. On occasion, it is expected to see only one Wright-bodied Volvo bus on duty for routes 6 and 98, two if you're lucky, however on Sunday 10 November 2013 we saw a record six buses on the Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 type working on route 6. An article related to these workings can be read here. Metroline route 6 also reintroduced VP543 (LK04 CVD), one of the last Alexander Dennis President bodied Volvo B7TL (VP) buses at Willesden (AC) to still sport the Metroline blue skirt before being absent of service for a year. It returned with a refurbishment, making the dull but powerful buses much brighter both aboard and from an external view.
Tower Transit tried to get in the mix this month by dropping a few newer Alexander Dennis Enviro400 (DN, 13-reg) buses from route 425 onto routes 25 and 30, routes allocated with older buses of the same generation - that's the same type, 11-reg, and Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodied Volvo B9TL (VN) buses. So did Arriva: Shires & Essex, where a few transferred Plaxton Pointer 2 bodied Dennis Dart SLF buses rotated around each of their single-decker routes whilst the operator's Wright Cadet bodied VDL SB120 buses were being refurbished. LondonBuses72 claims they are 'so old, it has bench seats'.
December 2013
The slightly dull vibe continued into early December. We started off this month's Weird Workings with a reminder of Arriva London routes 2 and 176's evening shared allocation of Alexander Dennis Enviro400 (T) buses alongside official Alexander ALX400 bodied Volvo B7TL (VLA) allocated buses. The vibe gradually increased, however, with route 149 introducing a new unallocated bus in the form of a newer 63-reg Wright Gemini 2 bodied VDL DB300 (DW) as opposed to its allocation of 10-, 11- and 61-reg buses of the same type, the 63-reg Wright Gemini 3 (DW579) having white-on-black displays as opposed to the normal displays as part of Transport for London's new wide range of mixed-reviewed schemes.
Succeeding the success of photos taken from his mobile phone saw the arrival of a new digital camera for the London Bus Breh and also the arrival of London's first electric buses to get him started. Go-Ahead London were the lucky operator to receive two new electric buses manufactured by BYD of China, each respectively allocated to routes 507 and 521. You can read more about them here.
London buses gave us a last rare working to round off 2013, a one-off special. Due to London Underground station closures along the popular London United 27 route, favoured immensely by our writers the London Bus Breh and LondonBuses72, the service attained a temporary allocation of Scania OmniCity DD (SP) buses during its day duties to increase the route's frequency as people became more dependent on the route during the aforementioned station closures of 27 December and 30 December. Scania OmniCitys had not been required for daytime duty on route 27 since the route was awarded with new Alexander Dennis Enviro400 hybrid (ADH) buses in February this year, prior to this OmniCitys being common unallocated workings alongside the old Scania OmniDekka (SLE) and East Lancs Myllennium Vyking (VLE) allocation. Now, they are only used on the 27 since Hounslow (AV) operate the night section to the 24-hour route. But the one-off part was Hounslow (AV) sneakily sending some Alexander Dennis Enviro400 (ADE) buses onto the 27, something we never would have foreseen! We will be waiting a long time for a working like this to be on the 27 again, a real treat for us.
January 2014
This year saw the service return of TEH915 (SN08 AAO), one of five Alexander Dennis Enviro400 hybrid prototypes from Cricklewood (W), after a three month sabbatical resting in the garage. Further north of London saw Arriva Shires & Essex put an Alexander Dennis Enviro200 Dart in the form of 3815 (LJ58 AVZ) on route 305 from Kingsbury Circle to Edgware Station.
Route 88 received new Alexander Dennis Enviro400 hybrid buses (EH21-38), originally for route 87, last summer. This month saw a different type of hybrid, a Volvo B5L with Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodywork, sneak into service for the route. An unusual introduction of old buses came a week later, when route 308 was extended to Clapton Pond from Clapton Park. Three Plaxton Pointer 2 bodied Dennis Dart buses (DP42600-602) transferred from London United were to help out with the frequency of the Tower Transit route upon extension, however instead three Enviro200s from routes W14 and W15 moved onto the 308 while the Plaxton Pointer 2 buses were put on the W-prefixed routes instead. This has since changed and route 308 now uses the Darts; this introduction marking the first Plaxton single-decker to run for a First London route since before the noughties.
February 2014
Some of us could not believe our eyes as 6-8 February 2014 saw the Tube Strike perpetrate the weirdest workings we had ever had the fortune of providing. The London Bus Breh got all that he could in the limited time he had available to get the best, including north England Stagecoach ALX400s as extras on route 205 and Alexander Dennis Enviro400 buses on the Scania N230UD chassis from Stephenson's as extras on route 91. The Tube Strike also introduced the highly anticipated chrome-coloured Borismaster: LT150 (LTZ 1150), on route 9.
This month also saw Metrobus rebel by putting a single-decker on popular double-decker route 75, Tower Transit unusually place a Wright-bodied Volvo B7TL on the 295 and 10196 (SN63 NCA), a bus that entered service as a Poppy Bus allocated to the 53, stray onto route 99.
March 2014
Escaping many enthusiasts' attentions is the fact that ex-Cricklewood (W) Plaxton President bodied Dennis Trident 2 (TPL) buses now at Potters Bar (PB) are working alongside Alexander Dennis Enviro200 (DEL) buses on commercial route 84. Informed by a colleague whilst travelling to and from both garages, the London Bus Breh via claimed double-deckers had been running on the route for two years now.
Arriva London had introduced a new batch of Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodied Volvo B5L hybrid buses (HV132-152) for route 319 under two months ago, and we had been expecting and looking forward to a bus or two from the batch to stray onto considered more popular routes 137 and especially 159. However, instead route 59 had been using the buses as if a shared allocation with the 319 and only one round on the 137 could be recorded into service as well as one on the 159, but for its early morning service. It took until March for a bus to stray on the 137 for its late service, but not too late for the London Bus Breh to squeeze in a photo and a small journey. Another Volvo B5L hybrid from the batch entered service on the 137 at an earlier time of five o'clock until eleven later on in the week.
It was not long until Arriva London appeared on Weekly Weird Workings as the closure of Lee Valley (LV) was the consequence of many north London routes under contract to the operator shuffling between garages, meaning vehicle transfers and new workings. Route 102 attained one Alexander AL400 bodied DAF DB250LF (DLA) duty from this.
But it was not Arriva London who closed this month's very interesting Weekly Weird Workings: it was Tower Transit, again! In January, we had old buses being treated as exciting new buses in the Tower Transit fleet in east London from Lea Interchange. Now, we had the headquarters of Westbourne Park (X) having a bit of fun placing an Alexander Dennis Enviro400 hybrid (DNH39122, SN12 ASZ) onto route 295 service. This being a rare working, it came to our absolute astonishment that DNH39131 (SN12 AUA) pulled up behind DNH39122 for the 295, DNH39131 having just finished service on the 23. It is assumed DNH39122 had some kind of technical issues as a few Tower Transit workers were inspecting the bus as DNH39131 took its duty on the 295. It will be a very long time before someone will be able to photograph two operational hybrids on the 295 - an accomplishment well done!
April 2014
April was all about buses of the Alexander Dennis Enviro400 bodywork. After a four and a half month sabbatical away from Weekly Weird Workings, London United made an outstanding return to the observational page with two favourable workings. Due to shortages at Shepherd's Bush (S), the garage began housing TA-classed Alexander ALX400 bodied Dennis Trident 2 buses from Hounslow (AV) alongside their TLA-classed buses of the same type for route 94. The TAs were to stabilise the frequency of route 49, but have since strayed onto the 94. With extra buses in fleet now, this catalysed Shepherd's Bush (S) managing to get a rare hybrid duty on the 49, a working which had not been encountered with the route for several months to a year. Many of the regular viewers of our blog would have preferred to see a hybrid with no advertisement wrapper working on the 49, but notwithstanding those workings happening the occasional time the London Bus Breh and Lee Thatcher are the only ones to photograph a favourable hybrid on the 49, although their photos both being the infamous Schuh Shoes advertiser of ADH13 (SN60 BYJ) - the most frequent and therefore annoying unallocated bus to undergo duty on the 49!
Meanwhile, Arriva London continued impressing us with their workings. They started off the new fun Enviro400 diesel unallocated duties with their Croydon (TC) route 197: a 13-reg Alexander Dennis Enviro400 (T) worked on the route all day, this normally being an occasional sight at night. Then when we all thought London United had done more than enough in providing Weird Workings excitement, they placed a diesel Alexander Dennis Enviro400 (ADE) on Enviro400 hybrid (ADH) and ALX400 (TA) route 94, the first time a working like this had been noted since 2012 during the London Olympics. Go-Ahead London also joined in by putting 13-reg Enviro400s on the 22 on Sundays and an even rare duty of one of only three Enviro400 bodied Volvo B9TL buses in London (let alone Go-Ahead London) on the chocolate route midway through the month.
Who said I was finished? We had even more when Transport for London introduced a 12-hour clock onto buses' iBus displays from 11 April 2014 and it only took a few days for most to all buses to have the time on them where it says 'Bus Stopping' - the time is displayed when the bell has not been pressed when 'Bus Stopping' is absent.
Also, with more new Alexander Dennis Enviro400 hybrid buses entering service on Stagecoach: Selkent routes 47, 199 and 136 (in respective order of how frequent the hybrids would appear on the routes), we got a very rare four day duty where three hybrids transferred to Plumstead (PD) from Catford (TL) for driver familiarisation on route 53 (read more in an article coming soon). In Stagecoach London's East London division, their Scania OmniCity double-decker buses at Bow (BW) received white displays for the transfer of these buses from route 205 to fellow Bow (BW) route 277 in August when the 205 receives new hybrid buses.
To round up a fantastic month for Weekly Weird Workings, we had another Tube Strike. The Tube Strike was for a more valid reason than February's secreted reason for striking (it was claimed to be because of the closure of ticket offices, yet it was to actually provide more holidays for workers): engineering works for making the tube service 24-hours by next year. The workings were just as good as last time, but most were the same buses, just on different routes. The London Bus Breh chased after the new extra buses, including Metrobus' first noted appearance in central London, their Darwen Olympus bus improving the agility and speed of service on route 14. Some unusual curtailments such as an 82 to Finchley Central were also photographed and Stagecoach: East London sent a West Ham (WH) Enviro400 onto route 15 to conclude an ADL Enviro400 predominated month of Weird Workings.
May 2014
May started off with a Scania OmniCity DD on route 15, the first time the bus type had seen service on the route at Bow (BW). The last time a Scania served the 15 was with the East London Bus Group at West Ham (WH) prior to the Stagecoach London takeover in 2011. This sparked off immense excitement around the bus scene, but particularly in the east. A small number of Scania buses, mostly the exact same buses, covered a few duties on the 15 on a few occasions but not bountiful enough to be classed as common..
Surely to be most notable working of the month, Go-Ahead London did the inevitable when their London General route 11 had a few duties covered by conventional hybrid buses as opposed to its strict allocation of Wright Borismaster hybrid buses. The allocation is strict to any route allocated with these ultramodern buses, however this would not be the first time Go-Ahead London have been rebellious with currently their only New Bus for London route, having placed a Wright-bodied Volvo B7TL months ago to cover temporary shortages. However, this was the first time multiple standard buses were in service along Wright Borismasters since the new buses were being phased in back last September, not forgetting the first route to ever have Borismasters and standard buses in service on the same route after the delivery of all the new buses.
Other rare workings this month included possibly one of the first Alexander Dennis Enviro400s on route 76 and the return of the Cricklewood (AC) prototypes straying onto other routes other than its fairly strict route 16 allocation when TEH915 (SN08 AAO) spent two days on the 332.
Abellio London inspired the creation of Weekly Weird Workings and opened the feature to the blog with the rare refurb on the 414 and their expected Poppy Bus on the 211, but had been keeping fairly quite ever since. They made a spectacular return to the series by entering two of their new hybrids in batch 2444-2451 onto route 350 a week prior to the buses being due to start service on Hayes (WS) new arrival route E1 from Metroline West. These new buses feature the new Abellio London moquette only previously seen on their refurbished vehicles, its royal red seating brightened by medium yellow handrails completed with light grey seat headrests and bodywork to balance out the red and yellow colour combinations. With the 350 being an extremely fast route, the acceleration was floored to the limits before the buses were even supposed to start service and ended a month with the most number of rare workings so far.
June 2014
London United kicked off June's Weekly Weird Workings. At the end of last month, the arrival of route E3 meant a shuffling of buses and routes around the London United garages to make space for the E3. Route 391 was one of the routes to be shunted out of Stamford Brook (V) on a return move to Fulwell (FW), and the inevitable happened only a few days after the garage shuffling had completed when route 33 had an Optare Versa from new housemate route 391 cover a duty of its service. In the meantime, a few buses from batch ADH23-51 for Stamford Brook (V) route 27 had a display update for route E3 as surplus for a shortage of Scania OmniCity buses for its service, meaning white displays for the formerly mentioned hybrid buses: these are ADH26, ADH35, ADH44 and ADH49.
Roadworks on New Oxford Street meant route 7 is to be officially curtailed to Oxford Circus from Russell Square until roadworks are complete in August. However, catching our attention was a new off-route terminus for route 98 ... Russell Square. Diverted from Oxford Circus to take a left onto Upper Regent Street before an abrupt right down to Tottenham Court Road, the 98 mimics the 7 routeing from here to Russell Square, a questionable temporary re-routeing but definitely worth paying attention to.
Abellio weren't going for another break from this page as their 14-reg Alexander Dennis Enviro400 hybrids ordered allegedly for Battersea (QB) route C3 found themselves starting service on routes 414 and C2! Battersea garage is possibly the most frequent garage in London in terms of switching buses around all their routes, but they don't overdo it so you forget which buses are allocated to which route. Well, they didn't until these new buses found themselves primarily operating on route 211. Since, all Battersea (QB) routes have had one of these gleaming new buses cover a duty of their service, but the most frequent - barring the assumed new allocation of route 211 - being routes 3 and C2.
Other workings this month included new 14-reg hybrids on Stagecoach: Selkent route 177 and Stagecoach: East London route 8, Perivale West (PA) enter its first hybrid to service surprisingly on route 611, and single-decker buses on double-decker routes 258 and H91, operated by Arriva: The Shires and London United respectively.
And just when we thought that was it for this month, Cricklewood (W) stunned us with amazement when they found themselves desperately needing to cover a duty on route 32 with an Alexander Dennis Enviro200 (DE)! No-one would have expected this, a single-decker not being noted on the route for years, possibly a decade. DE1127 (LK10 BYT) was in service on the popular north-west London route for the majority of the afternoon, and produced a working of such rarity that we can't think of a working as comparable this year and we wonder if we'll get a service as exciting as this one. A photo boasts this working on our slideshow at the top of the page!
July 2014
London United route H91 is liked for running down the A4 and M4 as well as for its giving us the unthinkable and unexpected with its buses. It is allocated with Scania OmniCity double-decker buses, but has seen Alexander ALX400 bodied Dennis Trident 2 buses stray onto the route from time to time. However, this year saw single-decker Alexander Dennis Enviro200 appear on the route and this month the route tested a Plaxton Pointer 2 bodied Dennis Dart SLF which gave the likable but uncelebrated route a bit of spotlight.
That was until two buses of London Sovereign's only batch powered by hybrid technology were shared between routes 114 and 183, a rare bus to see service on both routes. As July progressed, a few more hybrid buses joined the 114 and 183 bus services and stole the show for this month's Weekly Weird Workings, even if we did have: another Dennis Dart SLF on Scania OmniCity double-decker allocated route 482; a Marshall Capital enter the London General fleet for route 424; an Optare MetroCity on route 411; and an Optare Olympus on both Go-Ahead London owned East London Transit routes EL1 and EL2.
August 2014
The month with confirmed odd to rare workings with the Notting Hill Carnival, August was most anticipated ... and it did not disappoint.
Metroline introduced an additional ten Alexander Dennis Enviro400 (TE) buses to their Cricklewood (W) fleet, transferred from Holloway (HT), to cater for the arrival of route 112. With the route primarily allocated Alexander ALX400 bodied Dennis Trident 2 (TA) buses, only a few Enviro400s are required to complete the increased PVR of the 112, so inevitably these buses made appearances on all other double-decker routes 16, 139, 189, 210 and 332.
That was not all from Cricklewood (W), as four Alexander Dennis Enviro200s (DE1171-1174) were added to their fleet, transferred from Perivale West (PA). Assumed to be for route 112, previously a single-decker allocated route whilst at Hayes (WS), these buses did not see service on the route, but on all Cricklewood (W) routes 143, 232 and 326, and the 316 on very few occasions.
Metroline kept lighting up the Weird Workings this month by introducing London's third Wright Eclipse Gemini 3 bodied Volvo B5TL, VW1469 (BF63 HDG), to Perivale West (PA) route 297. In the meantime, the other two prototypes returned to service for Arriva London route W3 and Go-Ahead London: London Central route 12 respectively, the latter, V6, replaced by a newly built bus bearing the same fleet code but with a different registration to the original V6.
Whilst the odd Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TL (PVN) worked a duty on Go-Ahead London: London General route 476 and an MCV Evolution bodied MAN 12.240 was seen on Metrobus route 293, enthusiasts' main interest was on the Wright Cadet bodied DAF SB120 (DWL) that made a rare appearance on London General route 219, followed by the rebuilt DW411 (LJ11 AEB) on Arriva London route 279. Adidas introduced a blue theme to their sponsored Borismaster fleet with LT192 (LTZ 1192) allocated to route 38 whilst London Central managed PVL169 (X569 EGK) on route 12, but none of the above could touch what the Notting Hill Carnival had to offer with its enhanced and extra bus services.
We had the usual Alexander Dennis Enviro400 (T) on the 2X, Wright Eclipse Gemini bodied Volvo B7TL (WVL) buses on the 36X and the always interesting Mercedes-Benz Citaro (MEC) on the 436. However, route 205X introduced the premature entrances of batch 12304-12333 to its allocation this year, Borismasters having being hoped to be the new allocation of the extra service.
Metroline made a full double-decker conversion of route 316, as expected, but for the second year in a row this included a few hybrid appearances, enhancing the already existent hype over the service being double-decker for the two days of the Carnival. But this year, it wasn't Metroline who stole the show with their hybrid workings - it was Tower Transit, quietly and unexpectedly placing a solitary Alexander Dennis Enviro400 (DN) on route 328 and an Enviro400 hybrid (DNH) shared between routes 31 and 328 on the second day of the carnival, the first time both routes were graced with a hybrid bus. DNH39127 (SN12 ATV), contender for Working of the Year? No doubt about that! Also included in the Tower Transit list were the customary (for the carnival) Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodied Volvo B9TL (VN) buses on routes 28, 31 and 328 (the popular trio), not forgetting the hybrids on route 295, both an extreme rarity on a normal day's service.
Metroline had the usual popular diversions of routes 7 (via Harrow Road, Kensal Green and Willesden Junction) and 52 (via Edgware Road and Harrow Road), and it was said Metroline West had a 62-reg Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodied Volvo B9TL (VW) on 59/10-reg allocation loyal route 18, which would have made an interesting photo if known to be in service at the time! (All photos can be found in this article.)
How could any other operator contend with what Tower Transit provided us this month? Well, Metroline took liberties by attempting to contend with Tower Transit's first moment of absolutely brilliance by introducing two of their Enviro200s to route 112, and then putting an Enviro200 on none other than strictly double-decker allocated route 32, a sight to be taken aback by considering its rarity and an unorthodox fashion for Cricklewood (W) to cover a duty of their double-decker route by a single-decker! Route 140 closed off this month's outstanding collection of Weird Workings by introducing six new Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodied Volvo B9TL buses (VW1243-1248) to service, these having recently transferred from Perivale West (PA).
September 2014
Last month's workings were very difficult to be compete with and it will possibly stay that way for a while. September still gave us some interesting workings, nevertheless. Route 640 got underway with Metroline from Harrow Weald (HD) after Arriva: Shires & Essex lost the school route from Garston (GR). The route is now allocated with the new Wright-bodied Volvo transfers that started service at their new garage with route 140.
London United had duties on route H91 covered by both Plaxton Pointer 2 and Enviro200 single-decker buses, the latter bus type also seeing service on route 482. and a photo was finally taken of Metrobus' sole Optare Olympus, which had transferred and started service with no enthusiast attention whatsoever last month.
Route 49 moved to Abellio London's Battersea (QB) garage from London United's Shepherd's Bush (S), in dire need of a service improvement. Notwithstanding the fact that the service was still terrible but the frequency had improved, a few days after fitting in to its new home, route 49 was rewarded with an unallocated Enviro400 working.
If you read Optare Delivers Quality, you should be able to remember the interviewed Quality Line driver stating that the new Optare MetroCity buses suit longer routes such as the 465, as opposed to their allocated route S1; the 465 had an Optare MetroCity in service this month.
So, besides acknowledging the new hybrid buses on route 49 continuing the sharing-is-caring theme at Battersea (QB) by straying onto all the other double-decker routes as well as allocating themselves to route 49; besides acknowledging the last batch of Stagecoach's abundant hybrid orders (12334-12363) continuing the sharing-is-caring theme at Plumstead (PD) by straying onto all the other double-decker routes as well as allocating themselves to routes 122 and 472; besides Metrobus putting a singular-door East Lancs Esteem onto busy route 358, that was the end of quite a boring month for Weekly Weird Workings.
October 2014
This atmosphere to this section of the blog continued into October, where the main focus was the abundant applications of advertisement wrappers in sponsorship of the Red Bull Culture Clash at the end of the month.
A certain bout of hype was created with the services of W-reg Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TL buses on route 37 whilst remiss was a single-decker Wright Cadet bodied VDL SB120 covered a duty on double-decker allocated route 340.
It was not until late October did we start taking note of some long-awaited or brand new workings. These were mostly in southeast London, with an Enviro400 on school route 621 readying us for more. Shortly afterwards saw single-deckers on double-decker route 61 shared between an ADL Enviro200 and a Mercedes-Benz Citaro. School children boarding route 660 would have received a lucky hybrid journey home aboard 12286 from the generally positively reviewed batch 12261-12292 as quite another lacklustre month for this page came to a close.
Not before a Plaxton Pointer 2 bodied Dennis Dart SLF with a Waterside Way (PL) garage code made a first appearance on Rainham (BE) commercial route 575!
